In one of the most embarassingly stupid things said in 2006 after Keith Ellison (D-MN), a Muslim was elected to Congress, Virgil Goode (R-VA), gave this little nugget that he stood by:

“When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Quran in any way.

“The Muslim representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Quran.

“We need to stop illegal immigration totally and reduce legal immigration and end the diversity visas policy pushed hard by President Clinton and allowing many persons from the Middle East to come to this country.

“I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped.”

It was fear mongering, it was race baiting, it was an embarrassment to the people that put him in office.  But unlike the people of Oklahoma that continue to send clueless idiots like James Inhofe, or the people of Alaska that appear to have re-elected convicted felon Ted “Series of Tubes” Stevens, the people of Virginia appear to have taken their next opportunity, and have found themselves a new representative.  It is disappointing that a man like this is still popular enough that there will have to be a recount, but at least it shows that there are enough people paying attention to not allow this sort of hatred to be blindly allowed.

These dinosaurs have no place in the world, and it is time to move on.  It is unfortunate that some continue to get re-elected to office, but I will take what I can get, and at least can say, one more hate mongering, racist idiot is out of public office.
