Bucking for talk shows

I have read more than a few liberal blogs that made some silly suggestions that Bush would declare marshal law and try to keep himself in power. Crazy suggestions like that do pass by from time to time, and I often take as an extension of passion… or imagination, just having run a bit amok. As highly polarized as politics has become, it is not really a surprise.

It does surprise me (though I guess it shouldn’t at this point), when it comes from an elected official. And especially now. There is no upcoming election (unless he is trying to help prop up Saxby Chambliss in his runoff election), this whole incident will have been forgotten by his “base” by the time Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) runs again in two years. So what is the point? Why would a Congressional Representative say something as blindly stupid as to suggest that Obama wants Gestapo-like force, when even President Bush supported a similar idea as the “Civilian National Security Force” that Obama had proposed during the campaign.

Well, in thinking about it, I finally think I have come up with an answer. It must be the economy. GOP Wingnuts are all bucking for speaking fees, hoping to raise their profile (and perhaps a few dollars), by getting interviews with people like Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and other crazed lunatics. Heck, they may even get interview offers from others who want to lambaste his point of view, but it still raises visibility (and potential speaking fees), and if lucky he might even get his status raised in the wingnutosphere by getting listed on msnbc’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann’s Worst Person in the World, which is a who’s who in stupidity, and quite possibly a badge of honor for these idiots.

It seems every time we get rid of someone like Virgil Goode (R-VA), there is apparently another one ready to replace him.
